How Does the Finance Calculator Work?
Simply enter your loan details into the fields below, and the calculator will work out your monthly repayment, total interest, and total amount repayable — instantly, with no sign-up required.
1. Loan Amount
This is the total amount you want to borrow (the principal). Enter the full amount before any interest is added.
2. No. of Payments
The total number of instalments you’ll make over the life of the loan — for example, a 3-year loan paid monthly would be 36 payments.
3. Monthly
This sets how often repayments are made. Most UK loans are repaid monthly, but the calculator can be adjusted if your agreement uses a different schedule.
4. Payment Mode — In Arrears / In Advance
This determines when in each period your payment is due:
- In Arrears — the most common setup for UK loans. You use the loan for the period first, then pay at the end of it (e.g. end of the month).
- In Advance — payment is due at the start of each period, before that period’s use of the loan. This slightly lowers the total interest charged, since the balance reduces sooner.
5. Interest Rate
Enter the annual interest rate (APR or nominal rate) stated in your loan or credit agreement. The calculator converts this into the correct rate per payment period automatically.
Why “In Arrears” vs “In Advance” Matters?
It’s a small detail that makes a real difference to your total cost. Because “in advance” payments reduce the outstanding balance earlier in each period, less interest accrues overall, so for the same loan amount, rate, and term, an “in advance” schedule will always work out slightly cheaper than “in arrears.”
What the Calculator Shows You?
Once you enter your figures, you’ll instantly see:
- Monthly Repayment—what you’ll pay each period
- Total Interest—the total cost of borrowing over the full term
